Burnaby – University of British Columbia’s 15th president and vice-chancellor, Dr. Santa Ono, explored the shifting but profound responsibility held by universities in shaping and preparing students for leadership in the present and future global community at the event entitled “The Changing Role of Higher Education: Developing the Next Generation of Global Leaders.” Ono discussed the prevalence and ubiquity of technology and how it is changing the way in which students, professors, universities, and industries interact.
Ono emphasized the transformational experience students undergo during their time in higher education, both through course material, and also by learning about themselves and others. He emphasized UBC’s responsibility to lead in innovation and nurturing personal development and growth in its student population, all the while encouraging humility, embracing pluralism, and encouraging students to become aware of their own biases in order to become even better global citizens.
Following the lecture, Khalil Z. Shariff, chief executive officer of the Aga Khan Foundation Canada, moderated a dynamic discussion with Ono, followed by a question and answer session with members of the audience.
This event was hosted at the Ismaili Centre, Burnaby in partnership with the University of British Columbia’s Community Engagement Office. Approximately 185 people attended the event, including members of the public, representatives from local academic institutions, UBC students and alumni and members of the Jamat.
