As part of his state visit to Mozambique, His Excellency José Ramos-Horta, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and Nobel Peace Prize winner, visited the Aga Khan Academy - Maputo, located in the city of Matola, on  the 6th of July. The visit was attended by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Carlos Joaquim Zacarias and respective entourages from both countries.

The delegation from the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and Roy White, Director of the Aga Khan Academy, Maputo, welcomed the President of Timor-Leste and gave a presentation on the AKDN in the world and in Mozambique. This was followed by a visit to the school campus, with the opportunity to interact with the Academy's students, who welcomed President José Ramos-Horta. At the end of his visit, the President of East Timor said that ‘(...) for the first time I have had contact with this Academy, which is exceptional in its pedagogical design, in the provision of infrastructure and conditions for the children, it is a model that would be ideal for many countries (...) although of course, not everyone has the possibility to do it with such quality, both in terms of physical infrastructure, but also equipment so that the students can benefit from the infrastructure and the quality of the teachers.  This project is a model of inspiration throughout the world, for countries, governments, foundations and the United Nations system.’

The president left the following testimony in the Aga Khan Academy Book of Honour: ‘I salute the mandate of His Highness the Aga Khan and the meritorious work of the AKDN in Mozambique, Timor-Leste's sister country, and in the world.I commend the vision and values of the Aga Khan Academy in training future women and men who can contribute to a more just and prosperous society’.

East Timor is a member of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).The CPLP was founded in 1996 and functions as a multilateral forum aimed at strengthening mutual friendship and cooperation between its member states, and includes Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor.
