The cold, the wind, the rain and the very pleasant winter sun require a specific care for our health, both physical and mental.

In winter, we are more prone to moving less and to snuggle under the blankets. We neglect the type of food we eat and do less physical exercise, which is so useful for the health of our bones and joints.

It is also common for us to take advantage of the sun, when it 'invites' us to sit on a terrace or a park bench, without realising the sudden drop in temperature.

Winter,  therefore, calls for an adjustment of our daily habits. In addition to the flu vaccination and the booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, it is essential that we follow medical advice more closely, both in terms of  vitamin supplements and adjusting our medication.

Dietary care must be stepped up and the intake of warm drinks and water is also essential. Eating foods rich in vitamins C, A, E, B complex, iron and zinc is crucial to boost the immune system, increase the synthesis of white blood cells and antibodies, protect against flu and infectious diseases and limit inflammatory processes.

Where can they be found?

Vitamin C: Lettuce, spinach, broccoli, orange and lemon.
Vitamin A: Sweet potato, pumpkin and carrot.
Vitamin E: Meat, egg yolk, cereals, nuts, peanuts, walnuts, olive oil and soya.
Iron and Zinc: Beans, almonds and pumpkin seeds.

In terms of hygiene and clothing, it is important to keep the skin well hydrated, avoid very high temperatures in the bath and beware of sudden changes in temperature without being well wrapped up.

Clothing should be worn in layers, so that it can be taken off depending on the temperature of the place you are in.

Finally, and equally important, is to maintain a certain degree of physical activity. This means creating a daily routine. It means having cognitively stimulating activities. Mental and emotional health in winter are more demanding: they force us to fight against inertia, loneliness and lack of vitality.

During winter, the companionship of family members, the support of friends and the solidarity of the community are essential for the health of our elders.
