Walking is one of the most popular activities among people over 65, but you can dare to do something else: gymnastics or stretching.
Physical activity has numerous benefits, as it is known by all. But, after a certain age, it is essential for preventing some diseases as well as strengthening the muscular system, preventing injuries and relieving muscle pain.
One of the main causes of accidents and disability in old age is falling, which usually happens due to imbalance, muscle weakness, visual disorders, cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment or consumption of some medications. Physical exercise contributes to the prevention of falls through different mechanisms:
- Strengthens the muscles of the legs and back;
- Improves reflexes;
- Improves motor synergy of postural reactions;
- Increases flexibility;
- Maintains weight;
- Decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease.
It is important to promote routines that better develop physical and immune skills to achieve a pleasant and healthy life during the approaching cold seasons.
In addition to helping us achieve physical well-being, contributing to the prevention of injuries caused by exertion, exercise is still an excellent way to prevent depression.
Do not forget the old maxim: Healthy Mind in Healthy Body. Physical exercise is an excellent antidepressant!
