“I-CERV is not only committed to community service, but also educates its members about social issues, such as homelessness, global climate change, and hunger that plague the global and local communities,” said City of Carrollton Mayor Kevin Falconer during his presentation of the Outstanding Community Organization Award. On March 4, 2020, the citizens of the city were invited to attend the 13th annual Citizens’ Evening to hear the State of the City Address and for the presentation of the Carrollton Volunteer Awards.
The Carrollton Volunteer Awards included five categories of awards including Jimmy Porter Individual Award, Neighborhood Leadership Award, Individual Volunteer of the Year Award, Youth Volunteer of the Year Award, and the Outstanding Community Organization Award. A total of 25 nominees were submitted to the City’s Neighborhood Partnership Office, which was the deciding committee to select the award recipients. Nominees could be an organization, team, or non-profit. Types of organizations eligible for nomination include neighborhood associations, non-profits, PTAs, religious houses of worship, youth groups, or any other self-organized group.
I-CERV was selected from among eight nominees to receive the Outstanding Community Organization Award. This award is designed to recognize active organizations giving back to the Carrollton community. I-CERV was nominated for its work in the fight against hunger and the development of leadership and service skills in the youth. I-CERV has hosted numerous events around the Carrollton community and partnered with Feeding Children Everywhere to package over 160,000 healthy meals. This is the second year that I-CERV was not only nominated but was the recipient of this award.
"Being nominated for this award alongside eight other incredible organizations was exciting in itself. Winning the award is very humbling. It shows the strength of our volunteers and the work that I-CERV is committed to helping tackle the issues that affect the local communities," said Tasneem Devani, Chairman of the Aga Khan Youth and Sports Board (AKYSB) for the Central United States.
Other nominees for this award included Carrollton Farmers-Branch Soccer Association, Carrollton Host Lions Club, The Civic League, Friends of Furneaux Creek, Friendship House, Highlands Neighborhood Association, and Operation Kindness.
