Federal Election – Community Town Hall
Candidates from Burnaby, BC running to become Members of Parliament through this year’s federal election taking place on October 21, 2019 participated in a community town hall for the Burnaby South Constituency hosted at the Ismaili Centre, Vancouver.
Neelam Brar, of the Liberal Party of Canada, Jay Shin of the Conservative Party of Canada, Peter Julian of the New Democratic Party of Canada, Brennan Wauters of the Green Party of Canada and Al Rawdah of the People’s Party of Canada participated in a panel that fielded questions pertaining to this year’s election, moderated by Shachi Kurl, Executive Director of the Angus Reid Institute. The candidates engaged in a vibrant question and answer period, touching on topics that included housing affordability, balancing energy and the economy, diversity, and early childhood development. There was also discussion about whether, in the event of a party leading after October 21 with a minority position, each party would consider a coalition when forming the government.
“If there is a hung Parliament, I think it will be a success on our part because maybe the parties will start talking to each other and co-operate,” Wauters said.
The program continued for 90 minutes into the evening, followed by an opportunity for the audience to meet the respective candidates for the political parties in attendance.
