Dr Amr Abdalla delivered the 2016 Milad-un-Nabi Lecture on Retrieving Islam's Humanistic Heritage: Islamic Perspectives on Conflict Resolution at the Ismaili Centre, Toronto on Saturday, 30 January. The lecture was followed by an on-stage conversation.
The Milad event was organised by the Ismaili Council for Ontario in conjunction with Emmanuel College of Victoria University in the University of Toronto. Following the lecture, Ismaili Conciliation and Arbitration Board Member Fareen Jamal engaged in an on-stage conversation with Dr Abdalla. Closing remarks were delivered by Emmanuel College Professor Mark G. Toulouse.
Amr Abdalla
Dr Amr Abdalla is a Senior Advisor on Policy Analysis and Research at the Institute for Peace and Security Studies of Addis Ababa University, and Senior Advisor on Conflict Resolution at KARAMAH (Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights). He was previously Vice President of the SALAM Institute for Peace and Justice in Washington, DC, and between 2004–13 he was Professor, Dean and Vice Rector at the United Nations-mandated University for Peace in Costa Rica. Prior to that, he served as a Senior Fellow with the Peace Operations Policy Program at George Mason University’s School of Public Policy in Virginia, and as Professor of Conflict Analysis and Resolution at the Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences in Leesburg, Virginia.
Dr Abdalla holds a Master's degree in Sociology and PhD in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University. Formerly a prosecuting attorney in Egypt, he pioneered the development of the first conflict resolution training manual for Muslim communities in the United States and founded Project LIGHT (Learning Islamic Guidance for Human Tolerance), a community peer-based anti-discrimination project.
Fareen Jamal
Fareen Jamal practises family and estate litigation at Jamal Family Law Professional Corporation in Oakville, Ontario, is an accredited mediator and serves as a Deputy Judge in Milton and Burlington. Since 2009, she has served as the Vice-Chair on the Ontario Bar Association's Family Law Section and is due to serve as Chair to the Executive in 2017.
In 2012 she completed her Master’s in Law, specialising in Family Law and was the 2014 recipient of the Ontario Bar Association's Young Lawyers Award. She has been a Member of the Ismaili Conciliation and Arbitration Board since July 2012.
