Lisbon, 1 April 2016 — Professor Shafique Virani, an award-winning author and internationally recognised public speaker, addressed the Jamat on the topic of The Wonderful Tradition of Ginans.
Dr Virani is Distinguished Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Toronto, Director of the Centre for South Asian Civilizations, and past chair of the Department of Historical Studies. He has previously been on the faculty of Harvard University and was the Head of World Humanities at Zayed University in the United Arab Emirates.
Author of the award-winning book The Ismailis in the Middle Ages: A History of Survival, A Search for Salvation, Professor Virani has spoken widely to audiences in over 50 countries. He has received awards from numerous scholarly organisations, including an International Book of the Year prize and recognition from the Middle East Studies Association of North America, the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies, the Foundation for Iranian Studies, the Organization of the Islamic Conference.
