On 14 January 2016, the Ismaili Centre, London hosted a book launch of Mohamed Keshavjee’s Into that Heaven of Freedom: The impact on Apartheid on an Indian family’s diasporic history featuring the author and Edward Mortimer (CMG, Hon. DLitt.), Distinguished Fellow, All Souls College, Oxford.

This book captures the history of the South African Ismaili families and some of the people among whom they lived from 1894, when Jeevan Keshavjee left Kathiawad (Gujarat) and arrived in South Africa, up to 1994, when the country attained its multiparty democracy following the release of Nelson Mandela. Following the stories of a single family over several generations, the book covers apartheid in South Africa, the colonial and postcolonial periods and the history of the Asians of Africa over a hundred years.

The book lecture was organised by The Institute of Ismaili Studies and the Ismaili Council for the United Kingdom.
