Burnaby – The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is a global program with a goal to challenge, encourage, and recognize young people between the ages of 14 to 24. His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, presided over the inspiring ceremony where 70 youth from British Columbia were presented with their Gold Award at the Ismaili Centre, Burnaby.
Christopher Lewis, representing the Squamish Nation, opened the ceremony with a traditional territory welcome, followed by the Ismaili Council for British Columbia’s president Samir Manji who welcomed all guests and congratulated the 70 award recipients. Governor General Johnston then spoke about the award, remarking that “the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a wonderful tribute to the talent and determination of youth. Wherever we see young people, we also see hope and the desire to change things for the better.”
The event was planned through a partnership between the Duke of Edinburgh office in Victoria, the Governor General’s office in Ottawa and the Aga Khan Council for British Columbia. Over 260 people attended the event with local community leaders, family members and award recipients.
