Oh My Sweet Land

In this compelling drama, a Syrian woman prepares  kibbeh  in her kitchen while recounting tales of her vanished lover, bringing to life a land torn apart by civil war. A story of common humanity, hope, and bravery in the face of crisis, “Oh My Sweet Land” is an intimate story that provides a glimpse into the lives of citizens affected by the Syrian civil war.    

The play is the brainchild of Palestinian playwright Amir Nizar Zuabi, director Anna Bahow, and actor Susan Jamshidi, a graduate of The Theatre School at DePaul University, in Chicago. Jamshidi beautifully brought to life the stories and profound reflections of ordinary lives in extraordinary circumstances. In recounting these human experiences across time and space, and providing glimpses into the everyday life of its different characters, the play was a testament to pluralism of the human experience.

Performed to a sold-out crowd at the Ismaili Centre, Burnaby, the play was followed by a brief question and answer session with the director and actor. Closing remarks were provided by David White, Chief Development Officer at the Aga Khan Museum. Members of the audience included representatives from the Aga Khan Museum, Vancouver’s performing arts and museum community and members of the Jamat.
