On 26 July 1982, the Honourable Henry Bell-Irving, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, performed the Foundation Ceremony of the Ismaili Centre, Burnaby in the presence of Mawlana Hazar Imam.
The site in Burnaby, a suburb of Greater Vancouver, was selected for the Centre because it was here that the first Ismaili congregation was established in Canada. A firm, led by the well-known Vancouver architect Bruno Freschi, was commissioned to design the Centre, using a synthesis of Islamic architecture and contemporary building design.
