Part two of a three-part conversation series in Toronto featured an engaging discussion with Canada’s leading public intellectual, John Ralston Saul, on the topic of “Pluralist Citizenship and its Enemies”.  Saul and host Dr. Amyn Sajoo, discussed several topics which were largely driven by John’s books - The Comeback (2014), On Equilibrium (2001), Reflections of a Siamese Twin (1997) and The Unconscious Civilization (1995). The pair reflected on many contemporary issues that challenge pluralist belonging including the rise of tribalism, the importance of ethics and justice, the intersection of spirituality and ethics and the need to take action by assuming spheres of political power in order to effect meaningful change.

Attendees were given an opportunity to engage in a question and answer session following the conversation, which led to deeper dialogue. Following the event, Saul connected with attendees while signing many of his books which were made available to the audience for purchase.  John Ralston Saul is a Companion of the Order of Canada, and the recipient of numerous awards and prizes. The Utne Reader puts Saul on a list of the world’s 100 leading thinkers & visionaries.

The 2018 Ismaili Centre Conversation series is a series of curated discussions led by Dr. Amyn Sajoo on topics ranging from citizenship, identity and religion. To date, Sajoo has hosted 5 conversations at the Ismaili Centre’s in Vancouver and Toronto.  The final conversation takes place in Toronto on Saturday, October 13 with Osgoode Hall Law School Professor Benjamin Berger on the topic of Faith and the Law.
