The event took place at the Ismaili Jamatkhana and Center, Houston, where many external programs have been held in the past, such as book launches, a TedX talk, a City Mayoral and Council debate, lectures on science, faith, and philosophy, and interfaith events. These programs foster connections to other organizations in the community and increased collaboration as well cultural understanding.
Secretary of State Rolando Pablos delivered the keynote address and spoke of the Ismaili community’s commitment to service and pluralism. “You have certainly demonstrated what it is to give back to the community,” said Secretary Pablos. He further highlighted his own immigrant upbringing, and how quality of education were key factors in his family immigration the United States. He commended the Ismaili Center on its commitment towards Early Childhood Education and the resources it provides to the upliftment of the local community through education and service.
City of Sugar Land Mayor, Joe Zimmerman highlighted the Ismaili community’s contribution to Sugar Land and to Fort Bend County, and its involvement in various city and county service projects, saying, “Your kids are raised to be involved in the community. We love that.”
The event concluded with a tour of the facilities, as well as a discussion on future collaboration between members of the diverse group of faiths and cultures that call Houston their home.
