The National Council for Australia and New Zealand has embarked on a new chapter in its humanitarian efforts with the establishment of FOCUS Humanitarian Assistance (FOCUS). This pivotal development highlights the institution’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations, particularly those displaced by conflict and instability.

FOCUS is an international crisis response and disaster risk management agency with nearly three decades of experience in aiding communities in times of need. Since its founding in Canada in 1994, FOCUS has expanded its mission across the globe, consistently delivering on its promise to help those most vulnerable, under the guidance of Mawlana Hazar Imam.

While natural disaster response remains an important aspect of its work, in ANZ, FOCUS's primary emphasis will be on refugee resettlement and integration—providing displaced individuals and families with the opportunity to rebuild their lives in safety.

The need for robust refugee resettlement programs has become increasingly urgent in recent years. Millions of people worldwide are forced to flee their homes due to civil instability, persecution, and conflict, seeking refuge in safer countries. FOCUS is poised to play a crucial role in ANZ by facilitating the resettlement and reintegration of these displaced populations, including members of our own Jamat. The agency's work in this area is driven by a commitment to helping refugees transition from a state of dependency on humanitarian aid to becoming self-reliant, contributing members of their new communities.

Farez Veldjee, Chairman of FOCUS Australia, emphasises the significance of this mission, he says "Our mandate is to save lives and reduce suffering. It is a challenging but also an exciting mandate, allowing us to make a very tangible impact in people's lives, leveraging the expertise of our Board members and sister units internationally."

Through its resettlement programs, FOCUS aims not only to offer temporary relief but to empower refugees to build a sustainable future in their new homeland. This comprehensive approach ensures that resettled individuals and families can integrate into their communities with dignity and hope.

Dr. Gulzar Malik, President of the National Council, highlights the importance of this work in ANZ: "There are high expectations at the global level for FOCUS to deliver its mandate in ANZ. We are fortunate to live in countries of opportunity, and it is naturally our responsibility to support our brothers and sisters who are impacted by natural and man-made disasters by welcoming them to the safety of our shores."

While refugee resettlement is at the forefront of FOCUS’s mission in ANZ, the agency will also remain prepared to respond to natural disasters as they arise, ensuring that affected communities receive the immediate relief and support they need.

As FOCUS begins its work in ANZ, the Jamat will have the opportunity to learn more about its priorities and initiatives in the region. This marks the beginning of a significant journey toward providing lifesaving support and building resilient futures for those in need. Stay tuned for more updates as FOCUS launches in ANZ, helping to create a better future for all.
