On 20th September 2024, Raj Isar, Director of the Education Programme at the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), will give a presentation at the Ismaili Centre, Lisbon, where he will discuss the major initiatives of the AKTC, such as the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, the Historic Cities Programme, the Music Programme, and the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto. Isar will demonstrate how these programmes align with the interests of the Ismaili community while expanding the global reach of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).

With more than three decades of experience at UNESCO and a distinguished academic career, Raj Isar brings deep expertise in cultural policy and heritage management to this discussion. Since 2017, he has led AKTC’s Education Programme, where he works to integrate cultural preservation with broader development goals.

The following day, 21st September 2024, Isar will lead a session titled “If You Were a Curator: Exploring Portugal’s Islamic Heritage”, starting at 12 pm. This session, part of AKTC’s Azimute pilot project, will explore Portugal’s Islamic cultural legacy through a presentation of architecture, artefacts, and art. The session will feature cultural experts Inês Fialho Brandão and Inês Bettencourt da Câmara, who will discuss how museums and memory work can preserve these legacies.

These sessions offer a unique opportunity for the Jamat to engage with the intersections between culture, heritage, and development.
